Many users face issues when completing an HP hotspot setup. Mobile access points usually block network service discovery protocols. Because of this security feature, the HP Smart app cannot find your local printer. Fortunately, you can fix this problem by changing your network path. This step-by-step guide helps you establish a stable printer connection without using native network discovery.
Step 1: Connect a Repeater to Your Mobile Hotspot
Mobile hotspots use a feature called client isolation. Therefore, devices on the same hotspot cannot communicate with each other. You must introduce a wireless repeater or travel router to fix this barrier.
Setting Up the Hardware Intermediary
First, power on your wireless repeater near the mobile access point. Next, open the administration page of your repeater device. Connect the repeater’s wireless uplink directly to your mobile hotspot.
Creating the Local LAN Bubble
Then, create a brand-new wireless network name (SSID) on your repeater. Make sure to turn off any settings labeled “AP Isolation” inside the repeater console. Consequently, your printer and computer can now talk to each other on this new network. Finally, connect all your local client devices to this new repeater network.
Step 2: Install Tailscale on the Hotspot and Your Client Devices
We need a secure way to bridge data across different network spaces. Tailscale creates an encrypted virtual network over your active internet connections.

First, download the Tailscale application onto your computer. Log into the app to activate your secure node. Next, install the Tailscale app onto your mobile hotspot phone or gateway device.

Finding Your Local IP Address Ranges
First, check the IP addresses used by your travel router and your hotspot phone. These devices usually distribute addresses in the 10.0.0.0/24 or 192.168.0.0/24 subnet pools.
Activating the Custom Routing Pathways
Next, open the command line terminal on your hotspot phone or gateway. Type the following command to advertise your local subnets:

Before your printer can join the new network, you must manually push the login credentials to the hardware. This requires a temporary direct wireless link.

First, go to the physical buttons on your HP printer. Hold down the “Wireless” and “Cancel” buttons at the same time for five seconds. However, note that this action will completely wipe out all old network profiles.

Next, disconnect your computer from the internet. Open your computer’s Wi-Fi list and click on the temporary HP-Setup network. Then, open a web browser on your computer and type the printer’s default IP address to open the settings page.
